HDR Photo Fix — Ultra HDR to SDR

iPhone and Pixel Ultra HDR photos often look washed out on non-HDR screens. This tool reads the gain-map metadata, tone-maps to SDR, and exports a normal JPEG you can share anywhere.

HEIC is not supported — export an Ultra HDR JPEG from Photos first (Share → Save as JPEG with HDR enabled, or use a desktop exporter).

Why do HDR photos look flat?

Ultra HDR (JPEG with gain map) stores a low-dynamic-range base image plus HDR brightness metadata. Apps that ignore the gain map show the flat base — often overexposed on social media. Tone-mapping merges the gain map into a single SDR image with natural contrast.

Two fix modes

Tone-map to SDR — full HDR merge via hdrify (recommended for washed-out shares).
Extract primary JPEG — pulls the embedded SDR base without tone-mapping (fast, no gain-map processing).

Common questions

Does this work on iPhone HEIC?

Not directly. Export the photo as JPEG with Ultra HDR from Photos, or use Image Capture / AirDrop to get a .jpg with gain-map metadata.

Will colors match the phone screen?

Tone-mapping uses a neutral curve. Results are close to what you see on an SDR monitor — not identical to the phone's HDR preview.
