Complete Guide: Set Live Photo as iPhone Wallpaper

1. What is a Live Photo wallpaper?
A Live Photo wallpaper uses a still frame plus a short motion clip (usually about 1.5–3 seconds). On the Lock Screen it looks static until you wake the phone or press and hold—then the motion plays. That is different from a continuously looping Android-style live wallpaper.

3. Don't have a Live Photo yet?
If you only have a normal video or GIF, convert it free online first (no app install), transfer it to your iPhone, then continue with the methods below.
4. Method 1: From Photos (easiest on iOS 17+)
Best path for most people. Works especially well on iOS 17 and iOS 18.

Open Photos
Find the Live Photo. Look for the LIVE badge in the corner.

The square-with-arrow icon (bottom left or top, depending on layout).

Choose Use as Wallpaper
Scroll the share sheet if needed—this is the key option.

Enable Live on the preview
Tap the Live control (concentric circles). It must not look disabled or crossed out.

Add and set
Tap Add → Set as Wallpaper Pair (or Lock Screen only). Motion is for Lock Screen.
5. Method 2: From Settings → Wallpaper
- Open Settings → Wallpaper.
- Tap Add New Wallpaper.
- Choose Photos and select your Live Photo.
- Enable the Live control on the preview.
- Tap Add, then set Lock Screen or Wallpaper Pair.
6. iOS 17 / iOS 18 notes
- Wallpaper customization (depth, widgets, fonts) happens on the preview before you tap Add—enable Live first so you can check motion.
- Multiple Lock Screens are fine: long-press Lock Screen → gallery → add another.
- If you converted a file on a computer, save it into Photos (AirDrop is fastest) before using Share → Use as Wallpaper.
- For wallpaper-focused wording and exports, you can also use Video to Live Wallpaper.
7. Troubleshooting
Live Photo not animating on Lock Screen
- Turn Live on in the wallpaper preview (not crossed out).
- Settings → Accessibility → Motion → turn Reduce Motion off.
- Press and hold the Lock Screen (or wake the phone) to trigger motion.
- Confirm you set Lock Screen—not only Home Screen.
“Use as Wallpaper” missing
- The item may be a plain video, not a Live Photo.
- Convert first with the free online converter, then open the result in Photos.
Looks soft or low quality
- Prefer 1080p+ source clips and high export quality.
- Check Photos settings so iCloud is not heavily optimizing storage of that item before you set wallpaper.

Duration
2–3 seconds loops feel best; very long clips waste processing and rarely help.
Battery
Motion is mostly on wake/press—impact is usually small for short Live Photos.
Framing
Keep important motion near the center so Dynamic Island / widgets do not cover it.

Clips that start and end on a similar frame feel seamless when Live plays.
