MOV container and codec notes

MOV is a container, not a single video codec. A .movfile can contain H.264, HEVC, ProRes, or another stream, so the filename alone does not tell the browser how easy the file will be to decode.

H.264

Usually the most practical starting point for browser previews and iPhone-oriented exports.

HEVC

Can be efficient, but browser decoding and WASM processing support varies by device and browser.

ProRes

High-quality and often large; expect higher memory and processing requirements in a browser.

If a MOV file fails

Check the codec with the file information panel in your operating system or a media inspector, then try a shorter clip or an H.264 export. The converter re-encodes the output as an iOS-friendly H.264 MOV; that does not guarantee that every source codec can be decoded by every browser.

How to convert MOV to Live Photo

1. Choose a MOV file. Short clips (under 3 seconds) with a clear focal point work best for a lock screen wallpaper.
2. Convert in the browser. The converter exports an H.264 MOV (up to 3 seconds) plus a JPEG keyframe. This is not a system Live Photo with a LIVE badge yet.
3. Transfer both files to iPhone. AirDrop is fastest. Make sure both the MOV and JPEG arrive — not just the image.
4. Import into Photos. Open the MOV on iPhone and save it to Photos. The result should appear as a Live Photo with a LIVE badge after import.
5. Set as Lock Screen wallpaper. Settings → Wallpaper → Add New Wallpaper → Photos → pick your Live Photo → enable Live (concentric circles icon) → Add. See the setup guide for troubleshooting.

Physical iPhone verification of this full workflow is still pending. The export is not a true Apple Live Photo with maker notes until imported through Photos on iOS.

Troubleshooting MOV conversions

The browser feels slow or runs out of memory

Try a shorter clip, close other tabs, and rerun the conversion in a current version of Chrome or Safari.

The result does not animate on iPhone

Make sure you are setting it from the Photos workflow and that the Live option is enabled on the wallpaper preview.

The source file will not open

Check the source codec, then try a shorter H.264 export. Changing the filename alone does not change the codec.
