Why M4R?

iPhones only accept ringtones in Apple's .m4r format — an AAC audio file with a special extension — and Apple caps ringtones at 40 seconds. This tool re-encodes your audio to AAC, trims it to the section you choose, and names it .m4r so your iPhone recognizes it as a ringtone.

How to install the ringtone on your iPhone

  1. Download the .m4r file from this page.
  2. Connect the iPhone to your computer and open Finder (macOS) or iTunes (Windows).
  3. Drag the .m4r onto your device in the sidebar — it syncs instantly.
  4. On the iPhone, go to Settings → Sounds & Haptics → Ringtone and select it.

Common questions

Can I install it without a computer?

Apple does not allow installing custom ringtone files directly from Safari. The computer sync above is the reliable path; GarageBand on the iPhone is the only on-device alternative.

Why is my ringtone silent or rejected?

Ringtones longer than 40 seconds are ignored by iOS. Keep the default 30 seconds if unsure, and make sure the start point is not inside a silent intro.
